Spotify Shines with Social Network Features: Podcast Commenting Now Available
Spotify is taking significant steps toward becoming a social network. Known as a music streaming app, Spotify has introduced a new feature allowing podcast listeners to share their thoughts, feelings, and opinions in the form of comments. This new addition aims to increase user interaction and time spent within the app.
Commenting Feature for Podcast Listeners
Last week, Spotify launched the commenting feature for podcasts. With this feature, listeners can share their thoughts on podcast episodes through comments. Additionally, podcast creators can engage with their audience through polls, Q&A sessions, and other interactive features, providing a more engaging experience.
Will There Be a Commenting Feature for Music Artists?
Spotify’s Vice President of Podcast Product, Maya Prohovnik, hinted at the possibility of a similar commenting feature for music artists. Prohovnik stated, “I can envision a world where we expand [comment support] to other formats on Spotify. However, we always want to do what’s right for creators and artists while developing this format.” Given that music listeners outnumber podcast listeners, such a feature could make Spotify even more appealing.
Spotify’s Journey to Becoming a Social Network
Spotify is expanding its social network features, moving beyond just being a music streaming platform. In 2023, the app introduced the ability to add posts to stories. Additionally, content creators can use artist profiles to sell products and concert tickets. A TikTok-like discovery feed is also available in the app.
Apple’s Attempts at Social Networking
Apple previously attempted to turn its music app into a social network. In 2010, Steve Jobs introduced iTunes’ new social network, Ping, as “Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes.” However, Ping failed to achieve the expected success and was shut down in 2012. Apple later tried another social feature called Connect, but it also did not last long.
Spotify and TikTok Influence
Spotify openly acknowledges its inspiration from TikTok, particularly targeting Gen Z. The presence of a video feature in the app feed is a step towards this goal. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, during the presentation of the company’s Q1 2024 earnings, mentioned that they learn from TikTok and other apps to improve user experience, stating, “We are not different from others in trying to learn from the market. We learn what consumers love and strive to create the best possible user experience.”
Competition and Future Plans
Spotify’s new commenting feature enables users to spend more time within the app and actively share their emotions, thoughts, and opinions. This paves the way for new advertising opportunities and intensifies competition with other social networks.
By enhancing its social network features, Spotify aims to broaden its user base and encourage users to spend more time on the platform. These innovations are transforming Spotify from just a music streaming app into a comprehensive social networking platform.
