YouTube’s New Feature to Help Choose Videos: Play Something

In a world where endless content is just a click away, deciding what to watch can often feel overwhelming. Recognizing this challenge, YouTube is testing a new feature called “Play Something”, designed to make video selection effortless and intuitive.

The Play Something feature automatically plays a video tailored to your preferences, sparing you from the classic “What should I watch?” dilemma. While the specifics of its functionality remain under wraps, it’s clear that YouTube has been experimenting with different versions of this feature for over a year.

Currently, the feature is being tested on the Android YouTube app, where it will be accessible in the bottom-right corner of the interface. Unfortunately, iOS users will need to wait for further updates.

The content suggestions are based on your previously watched and liked videos, aiming to ensure that the recommendations resonate with your taste. It’s worth noting that a similar approach was tried by Netflix in 2021 with its “Play Something” button. While it initially garnered attention, it failed to sustain user interest and was eventually discontinued.

This move by YouTube could redefine how users engage with the platform, prioritizing convenience and personalized experiences. If successful, Play Something might just become the go-to feature for those moments when you’re not sure what to watch.
