YouTube Revamps TV App for a More Netflix-Like Experience
YouTube is preparing for a significant transformation in its TV app. With an upcoming update in the next few months, the platform aims to integrate paid content directly into the homepage, creating a more Netflix-like user experience.
Kurt Wilms, YouTube’s Senior Director of Product Management, stated in an interview with The Information, “Our vision is that when you search for content on our TV app, the distinction between Primetime Channels and individual creators disappears.”
Currently, YouTube offers access to series and movies from platforms like Paramount Plus, Max, and Crunchyroll through its Primetime Channels feature, launched in 2022. This system, operating similarly to Amazon Prime Video, allows users to subscribe to these services via YouTube, with the platform earning a share of the subscription revenue. However, access to this content is currently restricted to the Movies & TV tab, making navigation less seamless.
According to The Information, YouTube has halted adding new services to Primetime Channels due to challenges in integrating paid content into the homepage. The company now seeks to address this issue with a redesigned interface, bringing premium subscriptions directly to the main screen.
Additionally, YouTube will enable content creators to present their videos in a seasonal format, enhancing organization. Select programs will also feature automatically playing previews, making content discovery faster and more engaging for users.
