YouTube Shorts Updated to Include Advertisements

YouTube recently underwent an update aiming to enhance the viewing experience by reducing the frequency of ad interruptions. However, this change has led to the emergence of advertisements within YouTube Shorts.

Recognizing that ad breaks in video content often inconvenience users without a YouTube Premium subscription, YouTube strives to improve the ad-break experience akin to what you might encounter while watching TV. Yet, this alteration in ad strategy has introduced ads within YouTube Shorts.

Many users have expressed dissatisfaction with ads on YouTube, especially with recent increases in ad durations. Despite the company’s efforts to reduce ad volume, longer ads can diminish the viewing experience for users.

In an effort to refine viewer experiences, YouTube is testing a new approach to its ad strategy. In September, some users were presented with fewer but longer ad breaks. Google notes that viewers watched “29% longer between ads” with this change.

Users watching the platform on their TVs will now see an updated countdown timer in the bottom right corner of the screen. This timer’s purpose is to indicate when an ad break will end or become skippable, focusing less on the number of ads.

Another significant announcement by Google is the introduction of ads within the YouTube Shorts section on TVs. This experience will mirror that of mobile and web platforms, allowing users to skip ads using their TV remote controls.

Although longer ad durations may persist, reducing the number of ads could potentially enhance the viewing experience. However, the arrival of ads within YouTube Shorts might disappoint some users.
